The old ways

Talking to my Dr yesterday, I mentioned that my appetite had disappeared, which is sad, as I do love good food. His suggestion was to drink Lucozade. That took me back to childhood memories!

Glucozade, as it was known then, was invented in 1927 by a pharmacist in Newcastle. Aimed as a 'pick me up' drink for unwell people, it was soon acquired by Beechams and sold as an energy drink. As a child I used to love it, still do, and was tempted to ask if I could have a prescription for it!

Iodine was a great favourite of my Grandma, with the never to be forgotten remark ..'If it hurts it's doing you good'. Still used by the District nurses who come to change the dressing on my knee. And yes, it does hurt!

A friend's daughter in law visited the surgery this week, with a very nasty cough, wondering if she had pneumonia. Thankfully it wasn't, but she was advised to go home, rest and take lemon and honey hot drinks. So much part of my childhood! Hot lemon and honey is one of the best recovery medicines!

I think we are all more aware of other ways of healing rather than immediately going for antibiotics, necessary though they can be.

It's lovely to see the 'old fashioned' tried and tested ways being used. One of the worst in my childhood was a 'tonic' fed into us after a nasty bout of flu or something similar, called Parrish's food .Now discontinued, thankfully, (except for racing pigeons) it was a 19th century soluble iron supplement. Our mouths were always purple after taking it.

I wonder if you have any memories of the old ways?

My mother used to make us 'hot pink drink' when we were little and has a sore throat. I know now that it was honey, lemon and pink colouring!
Chicken soup does seem to have magical qualities.

Things that come to mind are Vic's vaporub and castor oil. Hope you get your appetite back soon.

I used to love Lucozade - we were always given it in a special small glass when we were ill.
In the maternity ward after baby number one in 1980 a nurse took my lucozade away and poured it down the sink- she said I shouldn't drink it if I wasn't breast feeding - never forgotten and still mystified!
I loved the metallic taste of Parishes food - a very odd thing to give children and I didn't mind syrup of figs either

Nanna always dosed me with Milk of Magnesia when I stayed with her as I was white and washed out. Also if we got stung she would whip the blue bag out, have to admit it did take the ouch out. Xx

The old ways often help people heal and feel better, such as hot lemon tea and chicken soup. In my childhood there was Vicks Vaporub, and when I was quite young, a wool sock was wrapped around my throat and pinned with a large safety pin. I hated that for it itched like crazy, and I have come to realize that I am allergic or highly sensitive to all sorts of wool.
I hope your appetite soon returns.

I used to love rosehip syrup and we always had a lot of honey. During a bout of being underweight in my younger days I was given Complan for 2 extra meals a day to get me healthy, it is delicious and might be nice for you.

Two remedies that my Mom would bring out were Extract of Wild Strawberry
( for diarrhea) and Dr Thomas Eclectric Oil for pain relief. Both of these products may only have been available in Canada. The latter apparently contained turpentine and camphor oil.

A dear friend who lost her appetite relied on Boost drink. Again, I'm not sure if that is only a NA product.

In my teens I had a boyfriend whose mother was fond of using Mandl's Iodine Paint on sore throat. It was supplied with a strange brush with a bent handle. I visited once whilst suffering with laryngitis, and she insisted on painting my throat. It was an awful experience. And made no difference!

I do hope you get your appetite back soon especially as you normally enjoy your food. From my childhood I remember Vick's vaporub and Milk of Magnesia. Neither of which I liked but they did work. However, hot lemon and honey is something I still use when I'm not feeling too well.

I remember the Big brown jar of Malt Extract that Mum kept in the pantry. I was given a spoonful daily during the winter months as I was prone to colds and 'bad chests', I had been hospitalised twice with pneumonia as a small child so she must have been extra careful with me after that. I loved it! I used to sneak into the pantry with a spoon and help myself! Yum!

I remember Momma giving me a little round disc to suck when I had a sore throat, I think it was called Thinis, it turned my mouth red. She loved bengay and vicks, it was always good for what ailed you. lol I also remember Sucrets, yuk. When I was very little, before chewable aspirin, she would get coke syrup from the drug store (not pharmacy) and crush an aspirin in a teaspoon of the syrup and give it to me.

When I was in England in the 80’s I had hot lemon drink with honey when I had a cold and made one when my husband caught a cold two weeks ago still using it! And there was lucozade!

Little patches of colour

Despite the drought and the effect it has had on gardens, there is still some colour around. I have a dry brownish lawn but in the flower ...
