I've had a few days away with a girl friend, while my husband has been cared for in a very nice Care home near Newton Abbott.
We stayed in Tavistock, on the edge of Dartmoor, a lovely market town with a daily covered market in which all sorts of things can be found.
This was our hotel, from where we could walk into the town easily, so the car stayed in the carpark.
We did a little shopping, a little sightseeing, and wandered across the Moor, avoiding sheep, ponies and Highland cattle.
Cream tea at the Two Bridges hotel?
This is the sister hotel to ours and is set right on the Moor, with a little river running through the grounds.
The Moorland is wild and rugged, stretching for miles.
Cattle wander the roads. It's best to wait for them to move!
Dartmoor ponies are everywhere.
They are extremely tame and will come up to people , hoping for food.
Back home now, but I'll be driving up again next week to bring my husband home. We miss each other!

That looks like a lovely break, and maybe even overdue. Tavistock is a town I've read of and would like to visit. Shaggy cattle and moorland ponies must have been a treat to see - and a cream tea....perfect!

Beautiful atmospheric Dartmoor, my childhood stomping grounds. Picnics every Sunday in Summer with toe dipping in the River Dart. We were there last year in June - enjoying cream teas at Dartmeet, and took lovely river photos at Two Bridges. Glad you had a well-earned break, and hope hubby enjoyed his time in Newton Abbot - Iived just 10 mins. from there, another good market town.
What a delightful stay! We have been guests in the Two Bridges and enjoyed the welcoming roaring fire in the evening after a drive through foggy Dartmoor on our way to Cornwall. The meal was first class as was the breakfast. Did you read that it was before the only school in the UK where alcohol could be served? I am sure you had a good break and am waving over from a 3 day stay in Cheshire.

Hello Elizabeth. How lovely to hear that you had a great time in and around Tavistock (that market is a wonderful place, with different sellers on different days). I used to live in Horrabridge, just on the edge of Dartmoor where I walked my dog every day, come rain or shine. As well as the cattle, sheep and ponies, there are wild boar up there - though I tried my best to stay well away from them. Scary animals! But it is a beautiful area and I loved my time there in a 1-bedroom miner's cottage - very sweet; with its thick walls and multi-fuel burner it always stayed cosy.
