I'm not sure why it is that Devon seems a much 'softer' county than Cornwall. Maybe due to the history of Cornish mining, which left the county with treeless areas and mine shafts on the skylines.
Our much needed change of scene week in Devon was as always, lovely.
We went once again to a small privately owned complex of six lodges built around a lake, each one designed for handicapped guests. Level access, wet room bathrooms, wide doorways...all help to make life a little easier when a wheelchair is involved.
This is the view from our deck.
Ashwater is a 'proper' English village with pretty houses set round a village green. There is a church at one end of the green, and the Village Inn stands overlooking all around.
You need to have a very good appetite to eat there, portions are enormous.
On the edge of the village is the shop.
This is a 'community shop', which is manned by volunteers.
There is a Post office with a manager, but otherwise no paid staff.
Set in a portakabin, it isn't huge, but it certainly had all the essentials, and some of the best granary bread I've had for a while.
We were blessed to have good weather generally, and did all the things you do on a holiday break....got up late, sat around reading, ate out, didn't cook etc..
We visited Lifton Farm shop and Cafe, Roadford reservoir lake walk (and cafe)...

It's good to be back and sleeping in our own more comfortable beds.

It sounds like you have found the perfect place for a much-needed change. I think of you even though I haven't been around much lately.

My late mother in law used to speak of Devon. If I ever were able to visit England, I think the countryside would be my first pick to visit. The little shops there must be so charming and perhaps I'd stay in a charming little bed and breakfast. Ah, I can dream!
Glad you had a lovely break in my home county - and that Devon welcomed you with good weather.
We left town as the hurricane hit - are now in northern California and weather is great.
All we know is that the cottage is still standing but power is out - hopefully that will be repaired quickly - thinking of all that food in my frig and freezer, scary!

My daughter lived in Devon for 15 yrs and we would visit and initially just go down the weekends whilst we were still working but then when we both retired we could and did stay longer. she has moved to Derbyshire now and the surrounding countryside is equally as pleasing even though there is no coast line for us to visit. It was certainly good timing for the weather; it's a real Indian Summer, even in October. It's a nice cafe at Roadford, isn't it? I often used to walk there with Zac; plenty of space to stretch his legs - and water, too!

I enjoyed your sharing of your vacation photos! I'm so glad that you and your husband got to enjoy such a special time away.. but you are right, returning home to your own bed is the best! It's always good to get home to our own comfortable beds isn't it. Glad you had such lovely surroundings to enjoy while you were in Devon though, and were able to visit a few interesting places.
