I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed.
I received a totally unexpected parcel yesterday from a dear blog friend, Carolien.
We have corresponded for many years, whilst in France we exchanged cross stitch patterns and continued when we returned to England.
We share an interest in stitching, patchwork and others.
It is strange how a connection becomes a close friendship, without ever meeting. Yet this is what I feel about Carolien, (one day I'm determined that we will meet)
I speak very little about my sweet husband, though you probably realise that after nearly forty years of a lovely life, the last few years have been hard , so hard for him. After a stroke in France he has become more and more frail, and now needs my constant care as well as Carers from a local agency three times a day.
I am used to doing everything now, making decisions, finances, medications, appointments, dealing with the day to day planning of life. It's not hard.
But I do get tired, and battling with both pulmonary fibrosis and polymyalgia with steroids,(recent) hasnt been easy.
Anyway, to the point of all this.
In my parcel was a most beautiful shawl, lovely gentle colours, just what I would have chosen had I ever thought of having such a lovely thing. Carolien had made it and sent it to me as a comfort.
She tells me that there is a Dutch word - Mantelzurger- that means someone who takes care of a beloved one. Someone who is like a mantle around that person.
I am still overwhelmed.
I'm not used to people reaching out and doing things for me.
Thank you more than I can say, dear Carolien.
I'm wearing it right now, soft and gentle on my shoulders.

That is such a beautiful and thoughtful gift. I'm sorry you are struggling and I know it's so difficult being a caregiver but also having things change so much. Praying for you, Barb! I'm glad you got a tangible hug from God through a friend!
How lovely to receive such an unexpected blessing. You're both in our thoughts and prayers so often. I like Terri's comment about the hug.
What a treasure & the gift of friendship it represents is even more precious.
Dear, dear Barbara,
As I just wrote in a mail to you: I am very happy that you like the shawl and have used it already. I hope it will bring you lots of warmth and comfort. It is YOU who deserve it so much, you know ... As you know I have lots of respect for you, you are such a sweet 'mantelzorger'! (I am sorry, I think my handwriting was pretty bad, it is mantelzorger).
And you know, I also think and surely hope we will meet someday. Maybe a holiday in Cornwall in the future, I'll keep it in mind. I would love to come over to have a cup of tea with you both, admire your lovely roses and tomatoes and give you a big hug in person.
Have a good weekend, dear friend!
Love, Carolien
Barbara, I know it's hard for you having to deal with everything - you are an amazing and loving wife and I know your dearest appreciates every moment you do things to assist him. My thoughts go out to him. I'm sure you both are thankful you returned to Cornwall where it sounds like the care is good and hopefully affordable with the National Health etc. Here, home help costs are off the charts - good health insurance is the only way one can face old age with good medical attention.
As for you my dear, I didn't know you had PMR! I've just finished 18 months of treatment for my second bout with it! I'm thinking you already know the only treatment for this condition - but if you need any info do let me know.
Meanwhile, my good thoughts are sailing across the pond to you both.
Love, Mary
P.S. A beautiful friendship gift - which you deserve so much.
Barbara, what a lovely tribute to your friend. I don't think I remember reading about your husband. I will add both of you to my prayers. xo
What a beautiful gift and thoughtful friend. I will be praying for you and your husband. I know what being a full time caregiver means as I am one also. God bless your friend for caring about you.
Hooray! It arrived safely! Carolien had told me she was making this for you and I am just so very glad! What a beautiful act of friendship! Isn’t she just so very special?
I too admire how you so lovingly care for your husband. Believe me I think of you often during the day! You are such a kind and loving person and I too feel very blessed indeed to call you my friend!
Enjoy your beautiful gift ❤️
Sending hugs and love!
Such a sweet and thoughtful gift, you are blessed to have a wonderful friend. I pray God will give you the strength you need to take care of your hubby, and to take care of yourself.
Your loving care for your husband is an example to me. Your shawl from Carolien will be a lovely bit of warmth in the autumn and winter. She is a sweet friend.
That is a wonderful friendship gift, stitched with love. You are doing the task of caring for your hubby with grace and strength.
I am so very glad you received this gift! when my Husband has been ill, it was difficult to be the caregiver, esp when one's own health is no longer 100%. I pray that God continues to bring comfort to you in all that you do and are facing. You are a blessing to many, I know as your presence here has been a great blessing to me. ♡♡♡
How very touching and kind. Thank you for sharing that word and the definition, too. Love it. Blessings.
Your post has touched my heart, but I am not surprised, for I too have met some wonderful people that I call my friends, even though we may never meet in person. Blogging has opened up a world of truly lovely people to my life and you sweet friend are also one :) I love how you and Carolien have become sisters at heart. It's a beautiful thing.
Aww... What a touching post.
Your precious friend has gifted you with much in more ways than one.
The work of her hands in that shawl is just lovely.
I hope the two of you have the opportunity of meeting one day.
Bless you ♡
I just came from 'She Graces Her Home with Beauty' blog by dear, sweet Debbie.
What a lovely and heartfelt gift you received in the mail. It touched my heart.
I pray that you will feel God comforting you through this gift, as you lovingly care for your dear husband.

What a perfect gift and the perfect word for what you are to your husband!
Sometimes our friends just know when we need a little 'pick me up.' You are an amazing, strong, and caring companion and friend.
