During a pretty wild storm this week, all our electricity cut out.
There was something very nostalgic about lighting candles and sitting in the semi dark.
Flames glimmered and shone and we remembered our childhood evenings.
My little Angel 'windmill' spun happily around.
The scents of the winter Candles filled the room and took us to another time.
The Carers arrived while it was still dark, and although we couldn't make hot drinks (we dont have gas), one of them said that their previous clients were enjoying fish and chips from the weekly village van, and she would go and get some for us!
We did enjoy them, and as it was the two carers' last call, they stayed and shared some of the chips with us. A candlelit picnic of sorts.
The electricity came back on later, it had been off for about five hours, and over two hundred houses were affected.
We rather enjoyed our time by candlelight.

Sometimes these forced events can be just what the doctor ordered. How sweet of the caregivers to get you some fish and chips! Excellent.

Everything is lovelier by candle light, and it's nice to relive the good things of the past. A blessing in disguise, as they day. I'm glad, though, that you got your electricity back!
Oh I know what you mean about enjoying the evening in candlelight!
We had tornadoes that came through our area about two months ago. Our electricity was off for three days. We did have heat but we don't have water when we don't have electricity. So we had to carry water for flushing & buy water for drinking.
Still it was so nice to eat by candlelight & play games or just talk into the evenings. The quiet was wonderful.
A fish and chips picnic by candlelight...a moment to enjoy that would not have happened if the power had not gone out. Nice that you could enjoy it.
I love eating dinner by candlelight - must try fish 'n chips that way! I love knowing you have a 'village van' still - recall ours when I was a very young child, fish 'n chips every Friday evening.
Glad the power wasn't off too long - we lost ours for 10 days one year when hit by a hurricane - it was very difficult and made us really appreciate electricity!

There IS something special about candlelight for a few hours, somehow makes the house feel more cozy.
Hello, Elizabeth. Mincemeat pie brings back such memories. My mother made her's from scratch, using venison or deer meat that my father hunted. They didn't let anything go to waste, so she used the neck meat to which she adde raisins, orange, apple, clove, cinnamon, and I don't know what all, but I do remember the strong, spicy citrus fragrances. Yours will be delicious. So glad that you getting well. And when the lights go out, we are humbled and reminded of what life would be like if there were no power at all.
I'm glad you enjoyed the candlelight and took the lack of electricity in stride. I never mind when we have a power outage for a few hours - it does slow one down and inspires conversation and memories.

Sometimes events like a power cut force us to slow down and do a bit of mindfulness! A candle lit evening without the distraction of tv would be welcome in this house, but difficult to enforce! Happy Christmas to you both, Betty x
